Points to Remember When Using Induction Cooktops

Whether you are using a built-in or countertop induction cooktop, here are some things to keep in mind when operating them.

  • Installation: Ensure the device is properly installed by a qualified technician. Also, check the comfort and ergonomics aspects. The induction cooktop must be connected to a circuit which incorporates an isolating switch providing full disconnection from the power supply when not in use. Before installing, ensure the work surface is square and level, heat-resistant, and has no structural interference within the space. Also, ensure there is an adequate flow of air from outside the cabinetry to the base of the cooktop.
  • Lifting the cooking pots: Using moist or damp potholders on hot surfaces can result in burns from steam. Do not let the potholder touch hot heating elements. Do not use a towel or other bulky cloth.
  • Surface units or areas near units: Surface units may be hot even though they are dark in color. Areas near surface units may become hot enough to cause burns. During and after use, do not touch, or let clothing or other flammable materials contact the surface units or areas near the units until they cool down.
  • Sharp metallic objects: Avoid placing the metallic objects such as knives, forks, spoons and lids on the cooktop surface. Also, avoid touching the saucepan handles and keep the spoons and ladles in the utensils. Do not use pans with jagged edges or drag pans across the glass surface, as this can scratch the glass.
  • Cleaning: As mentioned, avoid a wet cloth or wipe. Use a dry or damp cloth. Do not use scourers or any other harsh abrasive cleaning agents to clean your cooktop as these can scratch the ceramic glass.
  • Using touch controls: The controls respond to touch, so do not apply any pressure. Use the ball of your finger and not the tip. You will hear a beep each time a touch is registered. Ensure the controls are always clean, dry, and free from any objects, including even a layer of water.
  • Cookware: Use the cookware that is specially designed for induction cooking. Use flat-bottom utensils. Make sure the base of your pan or saucepan is smooth, sits flat against the glass, and is the same size as the cooking zone. Always place it centrally on the cooking zone.

An induction cooktop uses electromagnetic technology to directly heat cookware, rather than heating the surface or using an open flame. This makes cooking faster, safer, and more energy efficient.

A low humming or buzzing sound is normal, especially at high power levels. It usually originates from the cookware vibrations or the built-in cooling fan.

No, in fact, they are energy-efficient appliances. While their wattage is high, they are extremely efficient, with up to 90% energy transfer efficiency, compared to gas which is ~40% or electric which is around ~70%. Overall, they save energy and cooking time.
